Retention Ponds, Diversion Channel and River Channelisation |
After severe
flooding in the Kelang River system in 1971 when significant areas in
Kuala Lumpur were inundated for 5 days and further heavy flooding in
1986, a flood mitigation strategy plan was completed in 1989. In 1990,
BW Perunding was appointed consultants to prepare the detail design
for
that portion of the strategy known as the "Urgent Flood Mitigation
Plan". This comprises the following works:
- Gombak
diversion channel with a tilting gate structure to transfer a proportion
of flood flows from
the Sg Gombak to the retention pond.
- River
involvement and channelisation to the Sg. Batu to improve discharge
capacity.
- A regulation
pond located "In-stream" on Sg. Batu to function as a settling
/stilling facility for Sg. Batu
and diverted Sg. Gombak flows, complete with a diversion weir to control
over flow into the retention pond.
- A retention
pond formed from an existing disused mining pond to store the flood
water untill after the major
storm with a control gate at it's southern end to control release
of flood waters from the pond.
- A recreation
pond following the retention pond which will allowed the development
of a major recreational
and water spots centre around it.
For the
optimization of the pond design, a mathematical model was built to analysis
and test the
various possible operation options.
