Sewerage and Sewage Treatment for the COmmercial Centre of Ipoh Town.

Bumi Watson was commisioned in February 1985 to prepare a detailed design of a central sewerage system for the commercial business area of Ipoh Town which includes the busiest sections of the "New Town" and "Old Town", as well as Greentown areas. On the completion of this project, the cumbersome and unhygenic "bucket toilet" system that existed in the Town Center will be eliminated.

This project is planned to complement the scope of work that has already been identified in the Ipoh Sewerage Master Plan and has been designed such that it can be connected to the Sewage Master Plan system in the future.

The project comprises:

  • about 20km of trunk, secondary and service sewers, (including house connections) ranging in size from 200mm to 750mm dia.
  • five (5) submersible pumping stations to eliminate deep sewers through very narrow roads or backlanes, and congested roads.
  • three (3) compact sewage treatment plants using the Rotating Biological Contractor (RBC) system to treat flows from an equivalent population of 60,000.

The compact sewerage treatment plants were chosen over the traditional but more land-intensive treatment methods like the oxidation pond because of the constraint of available suitable land . Treatment will be to Standard "B" before discharge into Sg. Kinta.

The "Old Town " and "New Town" Sewerage systems are independant and are implemented in different phases. To date, the "Old Town" system had been completed, while that for the New Town is scheduled for completion in late 1994.
